Cherry is one of Charlotte’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods, first platted as a residential community in 1891 by John and Mary Myers. Cherry is also among the oldest surviving African American residential areas in Charlotte; it was the first neighborhood in Charlotte built especially to provide home ownership opportunities for laborers and working class Blacks.
Cherry is capable of ‘dreaming a dream and actualizing a vision’ for what we want to see happen in Morgan School. We commit to the following
1. Establishing a separate 501(c)(3) Foundation for The Historic Morgan School;
2. Restoration of the school’s name to the site in Cherry;
3. Working in collaboration with the NC Preservation Office to nominate Morgan School for placement on The National Register of Historic Places;
4. Accessing federal preservation tax credits in order to leverage private investment and National Park Service Grant Programs;
5. Initiating annual capital campaigns and strategic planning initiatives to shore-up the effort and make it self-sufficient;
6. Identifying additional private partners who support efforts to improve the quality of life for residents living in affordable and mixed-income communities;
7. Engaging the community to design and implement comprehensive community-relevant programs; and
8. Developing sustainability plans to ensure the longevity of the Historic Morgan School in perpetuity.
